Here is a daily does of amazing: World’s tiniest reptile discovered! Global Animal reports that four new species of chameleons have recently been discovered, and the buzz is around how small they are. Measuring tens of millimeters from head to tail, these miniature lizards have beaten the dwarf gecko and taken the spot as the world’s tiniest reptile. And yes, that is the head of a match this little guy is sitting on!

Shortly after they arrived on Laysan last fall, the Millerbirds made several unsuccessful, out-of-season breeding attempts. Now the birds are in their first proper breeding season, and it has resulted in this exciting news. Nest building activity was first observed on Valentine’s Day. The first complete nest of the season was discovered the last week of February, and the first eggs on March 8. Since then, birds from a total of eight pairs have been seen carrying nest material, building nests, or exhibiting other breeding behavior. On March 19, two pairs were incubating eggs, and one pair was feeding a nestling - which has just now fledged. The chick is active and alert, and both parents have been observed feeding it.

Remind me again why I didn’t apply to work for this project, even though I really, really wanted to? I mean, does it really matter that Laysan Island lies 2500 miles off the coast of California, and 800 miles from the nearest main island? Because look at this bird!

This is one of those ideas that will get more in terms of PR than it did in real engagement. I doubt that anyone actually used the mini metro but what it did do is generate a lot of chatter about the stunt so in that way it is a success.
